She was diagnosed with uterine cancer in 2009 and went through a 7-hour emergency surgery to remove the tumor.
Emma has cited Gianna Nannini, Loredana Bertè, and Mina (Mina Anna Maria Mazzini) as her musical inspirations.
In 2003, she began her professional musical career by participating in the second season of Popstars (later renamed Superstar Tour). She along with Laura Pisu and Colomba Pane were declared winners of the talent show and formed the short-lived pop/dance girl group called Lucky Star.
In 2014, Emma represented her country in the Eurovision Song Contest by performing the song, La mia città. She finished in the 21st place.
Her first EP titled Oltre was released in March 2010 and became a huge success. It also climbed to the top spot on the Italian Albums Chart.
In 2009, Emma participated in the ninth edition of the talent show called Amici di Maria De Filippi. She was declared the winner of the competition and it helped relaunch her music career following a few years of lull.
